Residential Insulation Contractor in California | CAL FOAM Inc.

Your home is the biggest investment you will make, and the quality of its insulation affects your daily comfort, your monthly energy bills, your indoor air quality, and the long-term durability of the structure. In California, where energy costs are among the highest in the country, inadequate insulation is an expensive problem — and one that gets more expensive every year.

CAL FOAM Inc. is a California-licensed residential insulation contractor based in Strathmore, serving homeowners from Bakersfield to Santa Barbara, Fresno to Los Angeles, and dozens of communities across the state. We specialize in spray foam insulation — both open-cell and closed-cell — and we bring the same professional standards to a 1,500-square-foot bungalow as we do to a large custom home. License #1123937. Owner-operated. No subcontractors.

Why California Homes Need Better Insulation

California's diverse climate creates insulation challenges that are not common in other states:

  • The Central Valley sees summer temperatures regularly exceeding 105°F and winter temperatures dropping near freezing — a 120°F seasonal swing that demands high-performance insulation
  • Coastal climates have year-round humidity that can drive moisture into wall cavities if vapor management is poor
  • Southern California's hot, dry summers combined with cool nights create significant temperature differentials that drive air infiltration
  • Wildfire smoke events — increasingly common statewide — infiltrate through leaky building envelopes, creating health risks for occupants
  • California Title 24 energy code requirements are among the most stringent in the country, and many existing homes fall short

Spray foam insulation addresses all of these challenges simultaneously — providing thermal resistance, air sealing, vapor management, and in some cases structural reinforcement in a single installation.

What We Insulate in California Homes

  • Attics
The attic is the highest-priority insulation upgrade in most California homes. Heat enters primarily through the roof in summer, and heat escapes through an uninsulated or under-insulated attic in winter. We offer two approaches: adding insulation to the attic floor (traditional approach), or creating a conditioned attic by spraying closed-cell foam on the underside of the roof deck, bringing the attic inside the thermal envelope. The conditioned attic approach is particularly valuable when HVAC equipment and ductwork are located in the attic, as it eliminates the duct losses that are responsible for 20% to 40% of HVAC energy waste in California homes.
  • Exterior Walls
Wall insulation is critical for both thermal performance and air sealing. In new construction, we spray foam into open wall cavities before drywall is installed. In existing homes undergoing renovation, we insulate open cavities. For closed walls in retrofit situations, we assess the options and recommend the most effective approach for your specific wall assembly.
  • Crawl Spaces
Crawl spaces are one of the most neglected areas in California homes, and one of the highest-impact insulation opportunities. An uninsulated crawl space allows cold (or hot) air, moisture, and pests to enter the living space above. Closed-cell spray foam applied to the interior of crawl space walls encapsulates the space, creating a conditioned crawl space that dramatically reduces moisture problems, eliminates a major air infiltration pathway, and insulates the floor above from below. Most homeowners notice an immediate difference in floor temperature comfort.
  • Rim Joists and Band Joists
Rim joists — the framing members at the perimeter of each floor — are one of the most air-leaky areas in any wood-framed home. They are also difficult to insulate well with batts. Closed-cell spray foam applied to rim joists seals and insulates simultaneously, making it one of the most cost-effective retrofit improvements available for any home.
  • Garage Walls and Ceilings
Attached garages are a significant heat and cold source for the living spaces adjacent to them. Insulating the wall between the garage and living space — and the ceiling of the garage if living space is above — dramatically improves comfort and reduces the load on HVAC systems in the rooms adjacent to the garage.

How Spray Foam Compares to Traditional Residential Insulation

  • Fiberglass batts: The most common residential insulation. Relatively inexpensive but leaves gaps at framing, does not air seal, absorbs moisture over time, and loses effective R-value in real-world conditions. Performs significantly below its rated R-value in air-leaky buildings.
  • Blown-in fiberglass or cellulose: Better coverage than batts. Cellulose has some air resistance but is not an air barrier. Both can settle over time and lose effective coverage. Neither provides vapor control.
  • Rigid foam board: Good thermal performance, but requires careful detailing at seams and edges to perform as an air barrier. Labor-intensive to install without gaps.
  • Spray foam: The only material that simultaneously insulates, air seals, and (with closed-cell) provides vapor control in a single application. Bonds to all surfaces, fills all gaps, maintains performance indefinitely, and consistently outperforms rated R-values because of superior air sealing.

California Title 24 Compliance

If you are building a new home or doing a qualifying renovation, California's Title 24 energy code specifies minimum insulation requirements based on your climate zone. CAL FOAM Inc. is current on Title 24 requirements and installs insulation systems that meet or exceed the code. We provide documentation for permit applications including material data sheets and R-value calculations as needed.
